From School Library Journal Grade 4-6-An interesting, well-written book on the role of rescue dogs in disasters, from avalanches to terrorist attacks. Characteristics, suitable breeds, training, and how the animals and their handlers spend their off-duty hours are discussed. Examples of individual dogs, such as two German shepherds that found lost people and a Newfoundland trained to jump from a helicopter into water, add to the title's appeal. Several of the color photos are memorable, such as the pictures of a dog racing along with a ski patrolman and a rescuer sitting with her Doberman, but in others the dogs are obscured. A list of organizations is included.
