From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up-An accessible set covering all levels of the government. Slim, separate volumes examine each of the three branches of government on the local, state, and federal level and the federal bureaucracy. Historical background, including origins, roles, and quotes from primary documents, is provided as well as detailed text on the day-to-day business of the government. Information on the state and local governments and courts is somewhat generalized, and some of it may become outdated quickly (such as the House and Senate Leadership in 2000) but their processes and typical structures are clearly delineated. Sprinkled throughout each volume are sidebars that describe various jobs (committee chair, district attorney, town selectman, etc.) and other commentary that encourages readers to think about issues affecting their lives. "People Profiles" of politicians, judges, and employees enliven the text. Margin notes provide cross-references, online resources, and definitions. The numerous charts and tables are noted in the extensive index. The books have a clean layout with considerable white space. Typeface and sidebar shadings alternate between patriotic reds and blues. An attractive and useful reference set.
