Romaine wonders who is to be the next victim of the ancient curse which hangs over the Faulkners. Her instincts war with her common sense as she learns of the general resentment against her family and of their long-standing feud with old Connan McIver. To complicate matters, she finds herself attracted to Tom Jamieson, who hates the very name of Faulkner. It seems that nothing will stop the malevolence of Ricard Falconer, who was hanged three hundred years before - as a witch.
