From School Library Journal Grade 4-6-- Flamingo, in Portuguese, means "red goose," and Hewett's bright, full-color photographs illustrate the brilliant color of these stunning birds. Photographed at Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida, they show every aspect of the lives of the captive Caribbean flamingo flock living there. The development of one chick, Chogogo, is followed in the text and photographs. His name is a South-American Indian word for the flamingo, and comes from the sound they make when they are flying or feeding. This is a beautiful browsing book full of interesting information, but it's not divided into chapters, and the one-page index does not lead to the answers to such basic questions as size, incubation period, etc. The information is in the text, but not quickly accessible. This lacks the endearing charm of A Flamingo Is Born (Putnam, 1978; o.p.) by Max Alfred Zoll, but the stunning photographs and more in-depth text make it a useful addition. --Frances E.
