From the very first page, I was charmed by how witty and engaging the prose is. Sangu Mandanna has a real gift with language—her sentences sparkle without ever feeling overdone, and the humor is woven in naturally so that it feels effortless. The premise itself is immediately intriguing: a witch, forced by lifelong rules to live alone and hide her nature, suddenly finds herself drawn into a remote home where she must teach three young witches to control their magic. What begins as a simple task quickly grows more complicated, pulling her into both danger and unexpected belonging. What makes the story shine even brighter is its cast of characters. Each one feels distinct, interesting, and believable—from the curious children to the eccentric adults who care for them. They never blur together, and I found myself invested in each of their personalities and arcs. And then there’s the plot twist near the end. I won’t spoil it, of course, but let’s just say it blindsided me in the best way. It’s a real doozy, and it makes the journey to that point more than worth it. Honestly, I’m trying to think of anything I didn’t like, and it’s tough. Aside from one or two tiny typos, this feels like a nearly flawless book. It’s heartfelt, clever, and full of warmth while still delivering real surprises. Highly recommended—this is one of those rare novels that leaves you both satisfied and wishing for more. Read more
