Tales from a Globalizing World

A new world is emerging from the accelerating phenomenon that we call globalization. It's a world in which people, merchandise, finance, technology, knowledge, and illicit goods circulate freely, and the interdependence of cultures, economies, and individuals has increased beyond all imagining. While globalization connects people and places that are geographically remote, it also fragments local connections and ties. To reveal the constructive as well as the destructive power of globalization, ten very different and distinguished photographers have been commissioned to produce photo-stories from different continents. Akinbode Akinbiyi looks at religion in Brazil and Nigeria, and their mutual influence. Thomas Kern traveled from Detroit to the Mexican border, examining the idea of American identity post-9/11. Ziyo Gafic gives an insider's evocation of the aftermath of war in a Bosnian community. Some of Philip Jones Griffiths's famous photographs from Vietnam Inc of thirty years ago appear beside his new shots of a country moving towards liberalization. Shehzad Noorani examines tourism, migration, and the effect of regional poverty on the lives of children in India and Nepal. Cristina Nunez focuses on Italy and the transnational elite, backroom workers, and street traders in the world of fashion. Tim Hetherington celebrates the way sports have rehabilitated the young after the conflicts in Angola, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Bertien van Manen photographs the souvenirs of immigrants living in bleak apartments on the fringes of Paris, and Stephan Vanfleteren shows social exclusion in the First World with portraits of lonely people in Belgium. Andreas Seibert explores urbanization in the twenty-first century in his study of migrant workers building a global city on the Pearl River Delta in China. 250 illustrations, 120 in color.
