“It happened fast. Thirty-two minutes for one world to die, another to be born.” First, the unthinkable: a security breach at a secret U.S. government facility unleashes the monstrous product of a chilling military experiment. Then, the unspeakable: a night of chaos and carnage gives way to sunrise on a nation, and ultimately a world, forever altered. All that remains for the stunned survivors is the long fight ahead and a future ruled by fear—of darkness, of death, of a fate far worse. As civilization swiftly crumbles into a primal landscape of predators and prey, two people flee in search of sanctuary. FBI agent Brad Wolgast is a good man haunted by what he’s done in the line of duty. Six-year-old orphan Amy Harper Bellafonte is a refugee from the doomed scientific project that has triggered apocalypse.

"All those years, waiting for the Army, and it turns out the Army is us."

It is bad enough that Mother Nature throws natural disasters our way, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, plagues, but when the U.S. government gets involved you just KNOW that events are going to go to hell in a hand basket. Dr. Jonas Lear heads to Bolivia to check out rumors of a "new" old virus. He specializes in paleovirology, the study of ancient viruses. What he finds ends up destroying the world as we know it, with a little help from USAMRIID. Lear uses an altered form of the virus to infect twelve inmates that were "rescued" from death row. These inmates, along with Patient Zero from Bolivia, are changed into vampiric creatures that are totally bloodthirsty, can run and jump better than any human, and are extremely hard to kill. Now doesn't it make sense that the U.S. Army would want to develop these creatures into weapons? "The Passage" is a grand sweeping epic of a story covering hundreds of years. Time periods are now BV (before virus) and AV (after virus). Cronin's character development is superb. I felt like I knew each and every character in this story. In the saga are Dr. Lear, the Twelve plus Patient Zero, Project Noah, inmates from death row, even slimier inmates (pedophiles) that are sweeps that clean up after the Twelve, Amy the One Who is Different, bloody scenes, devastation, hope slim as it might be, Sister Lacey, Special Agent Wolgast, Colorado, Oregon, evacuation of children, trains, and on and on with unbelievable adventures. I had read this book when it first came out in 2010 but decided to read it again to refresh my memory before I readThe Twelve (Book Two of The Passage Trilogy). It was exciting the first time and brought thoughts of Stephen King's The Stand to mind and also the movie Let Me In. But it stands gloriously on its own and I'm glad I read it again. If you like superb writing, or if you like horror, or vampires, or just want to read a darn good book, pick up "The Passage" and then start on book two of the trilogy. I'm already ab...
