The story is simple. Simon wants a dog but can't have one because he's allergic to them. His zany aunt, fresh back from her travels, brings him a rare fish instead. Having no fish food, Simon gives the fish dog bones left over from the time he tried to keep a dog. The dog bones have a startling effect: the fish grows large, jumps out of its bowl and acts like a dog. It even saves Simon from drowning in a frozen lake. The fish eventually pines for its watery habitat, and in an act of bravado, fills Simon's whole house with water while his parents are away, making a giant fish bowl. The situation is made right by the ingestion of some goldfish snacks and Spot the fish returns (almost) to his fishy habitat.
