The Terrible Alternative: Christian Martyrdom In The Twentieth Century

These ten essays look at the lives and deaths of ten 20th-century martyrs, analyzing the particular political and ideological contexts which give rise to martyrdom. The martyrs include Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Martin Luther King and Archbishop Romero, shot before his altar in San Salvador. The publication of this book is timed to coincide with the erection of ten statues in Westminster Abbey, London, and includes photographs of the statues, and where possible, of the martyrs themselves.
