This revised edition is an attempt to provide an updated, more balanced, and thorough view of the impact of government and other external influences on the operations of business firms. Traditional books in this area have emphasized antitrust activities and independent regulatory agencies, such as the Interstate Commerce Commission. Although it is useful insofar as it covers important aspects of business-government relations, the traditional approach ignores the newer types of public concerns and the resultant government activities that have a daily impact on virtually every enterprise in the nation. Hence, this book tries to break some new ground. Rather than being concerned with the specialized part of the public-private relationship, which is primarily the domain of lawyers (and secondarily of economists) , it emphasizes the more far-ranging regulatory activities which impinge on almost every business executive, line or staff, headquarters or divisional, in small companies and large, and industries that are not ostensibly "regulated," as well as those that are.
