The Third International Symposium on Waste Management Problems in Agro-Industries, held in Mexico City in October 1995, was motivated by the growing international interest in the subject. The success of the two preceding symposia (in Turkey in 1989 and 1992) encouraged the IAWQ to establish it as a regular IAWQ symposium to promote the interchange of knowledge and ideas among the scientific communities of a wide number of countries. The continuing growth in interest in agro-industrial wastes management is reflected in these proceedings. Papers selected, with work from Europe and Latin America strongly represented, show the progress being made in a range of agro-industrial situations. The papers in this volume cover characterization of effluents, treatment processes (particularly low-cost anaerobic biological treatment often combined with other processes) and recycling and pollution prevention schemes, with foodstuffs, leather, slaughterhouse, animal husbandry, fermentation and distillation plant effluents being successfully treated.Financial considerations and the need to develop and adapt treatment to local conditions as part of developing integrated management policies is stressed, as is the potential for using agro-industrial wastewaters in irrigation.
