This seems to be an attempt to update the National Atlas of the United States of America (1970) , a long out-of-print gem. Like that work this is a thematic atlas of the United States. Maps cover different topics, including population, climate, geology, and agriculture. Libraries whose National Atlas has disintegrated over the years may find this useful. Unfortunately, the book is ugly and unsatisfying, with garish colors, poor registration, a table of contents not divided up by subject, and no index or bibliography. On the bright side, it does include 1980s data, and it presents information in a forceful, unsubtle fashion. Perhaps school libraries will want it for these reasons.Mary L.
